Kurzbeschreibung

While Intersex people have critically addressed pathologisation and non-consensual sex modifications, their voices remain few considering their estimated numbers. Though various NGOs and social actors impart them credit, others, and intersex-management doctors foremost, lend doubt to the representativeness and authoritativeness of their claims. How is it that we can make sense of the small number of intersex people who publicly speak up against intersex management protocols? Frickers’ (2008) concepts of hermeneutical marginalization and testimonial injustice, which are part of the theorization of the credibility economy, are helpful to answer this question. They can be complemented with a structural lens, such as Fraser’s (1987) sociocultural means of interpretation and communication. I make the argument that the small number of intersex people who publicly speak up is a result of the very limited hermeneutical and material resources intersex people have, where materiality is to be understood as including bodily resources.

Janik Bastien Charlebois is regular professor at the Sociology Department at UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal). She is co-researcher for the partnership research group «Testimonial Cultures» (FQRSC), as well as a member of the Chair of Research on Homophobia, and the Feminist research and studies institute (IREF). She leads a participatory-based research on the Emergence of Intersex Voices. Her main fields of specialization include: cultural democracy, sexual diversity, intersexuality, and social movements. Openly intersex, she is also politically involved in intersex activism.
