ZtG-Colloquium: Getting our hands dirty: Critical engagements with data in the life sciences

Data are never raw findings, but are rather collected, cleansed andprocessed in accordance with specific rules. This workshop seeksto address critical issues about data and matter in the life sciences.
The definition of data depends not only on the scientific discipline but, more broadly, on the knowledge cultures of specific fields. The distinction brings forth opposing definitions of purity in research,and consequently, even if not explicitly, opposing definitions of dirt: findings in the life sciences seem to be polluted by the influence of historicity, culture and politics, whereas the humanities have seemed for a long time to attempt to avoid and disavow the uncanny realms of matter and ontology. How can we cross some of these clear-cut borders and engage with both notions of dirt?
