#4GenderStudies Wissenschaftswoche

The German Gender Studies Association invites to a roundtable discussion in the context of the fifth edition of the Science Day #4GenderStudies on Saturday, December 18, 2021, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm (CET) (online). We would like to revisit last year’s discussion on the current European situation of gender studies including the recent developments narrowing down the unruly possibilities of gender studies. This time we want to focus more strongly on science policy and the situation within academia, thereby asking at the same time for ways of solidarity beyond borders of academia itself and for shifts in exclusionary academic knowledge productions. How can we as gender_queer scholars address the nationalist narratives and structures? To what extent do gender studies and queer-feminist approaches become the subject of debates about alleged restrictions on academic freedom, artistic freedom, and freedom of speech? And how does one deal with this within and outside of academia? At the center of the roundtable discussion are not only practices, politics, and possibilities of solidarities between gender and queer studies scholars within academia, but also questions around institutional developments and academic freedom.

Speakers: Maureen Maisha Auma (University for Applied Sciences Magdeburg & Berlin University Alliance), Erzsébet Barát (University of Szeged, Hungary, & Central European University, Budapest/Vienna), Čarna Brković (University of Göttingen), and Clare Hemmings (London School of Economics and Political Science)

Moderation: Beate Binder (Humboldt University of Berlin) & Oliver Klaassen (Carl Ossietzky University Oldenburg & Justus Liebig University Gießen)
