Law – Gender – Collectivity

The DFG Research Unit "Law – Gender – Collectivity" joins scholars of diverse subjects, ranging from law, sociology, and European ethnology to history, who focus on the relationship between law, sex/gender, and collectivity. Initiated by Susanne Baer and led by Beate Binder, it involves researchers from various Berlin-based universities, as well as University of Potsdam and European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). They question the efficacy of gendered collectivity in a hegemonic male-oriented, and hetero-normative tradition of law. With a deepend understanding of collectivization processes that are both legally standardized and gendered, this research unit explores how current social conflicts present themselves as well as how they may be understood and described with due complexity. After the first phase of funding ("Processes of Norming, Categorization, and Solidarization," 2018-2021), the research group entered its second phase in the summer of 2021, under the name "The Contested General and the New Common". The second phase will last three years, until 2024.
