Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Zentrum für Transdisziplinäre Geschlechterstudien

Gender Studies "auf Deutsch"

Since the 1990s, institutes for women’s and gender research, independent Gender Studies bachelor’s and master’s programs, as well as graduate and post-graduate programs, have been a part of colleges and universities throughout the German-speaking world. In addition, there are a number of non-university organizations and networks that support scholarly and political communication in the field of Gender Studies.

In general, Gender Studies as a discipline is much younger in Germany than it is in US and UK academic institutions. When it came to Germany, Gender Studies faced the additional problem in the rigid division between disciplines that characterizes German academia. The establishment of the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies was an important step in overcoming that obstacle. Today, the Center helps support Gender Studies in German academia by cosponsoring professorships within the disciplines. Gender Studies at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin is therefore not organized in a traditional "department," but rather a thriving community of scholars doing research in Gender Studies across the disciplines.

You can find out more about what Gender Studies in Berlin is like in our short history of the ZtG.

German-language Resources

More information about materials available for Gender Studies research in Germany is available at our Gender Library. While many of these resources can be accessed online, only a small portion is available in full English translation.

You can also find a list of other German Gender Studies organizations, institutions, and networks on our links page. Please be aware that since these organizations conduct their work in German, English translations are not typically available. The links include:

  • Coordination centers at German-speaking universities
  • University degree programs, developing and already established university programs, women’s research in further education, study offers online, women’s higher education institutions and collections of links to study programs in Europe and North America
