Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Gender as a Category of Knowledge

Katja S. Baumgärtner

PhD Project:
International and Transnational Filmic Representations of the Concentration Camp Ravensbrück: Interdependencies of Memory and Gender

Description of the Project

This interdisciplinary PhD project attempts a discourse analysis of films of different genres, such as documentaries, feature films, essay films, compilation films, and/or informative films about the Ravensbrück concentration camp from a transnational perspective. The study examines interrelations of memory, gender, ›race‹, class, nation, age, generation, and/or dis/ability. I approach this project with the question if and how these categories matter and in which ways films reflect shifting political and cultural processes in understanding, interpreting, and/or reinterpreting the Nazi past, the Holocaust/Shoah, and the camps. Multifaceted representations in films about Ravensbrück can thus be seen as a motor and as an indicator for the state of democratization in various countries.
