Description of the Project
|
This interdisciplinary PhD project attempts a discourse analysis of films of different genres, such as documentaries, feature films, essay films, compilation films, and/or informative films about the Ravensbrück concentration camp from a transnational perspective. The study examines interrelations of memory, gender, ›race‹, class, nation, age, generation, and/or dis/ability. I approach this project with the question if and how these categories matter and in which ways films reflect shifting political and cultural processes in understanding, interpreting, and/or reinterpreting the Nazi past, the Holocaust/Shoah, and the camps. Multifaceted representations in films about Ravensbrück can thus be seen as a motor and as an indicator for the state of democratization in various countries. |

Particulars

Katja S. Baumgärtner holds a Diplom (MA equivalent) in design and photography (FHTW Berlin), and an MA in gender studies and philosophy (HU Berlin). She has been a PhD-candidate at HU Berlin since 2010 and is an associate fellow at the department of Jewish studies at HU Berlin (2009 KJSand2012 ZJS), and of the DFG Research Training Group “Gender as a Category of Knowledge. ”In 2011–2012 she was a teaching assistant at the University of Virginia (UVA), USA and is a member of the non-profit organization Internationaler Freundeskreis Ravensbrück e.V. |
