PhD Project: The Diseased Sex: Medicine and Prostitution in Berlin in the Early 20th Century |

Description of the Project
|
The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate how the forcible supervision of prostitutes by the sanitary police in the early 20th century produced powerful sexual differences. The central epistemic interest of my project is the interaction between the controlled and the controlling: at this historical moment academic knowledge ranging from gynecology, to criminology, through modern urban planning, became intertwined, which had a broader effect on identity production. The figure of the prostitute makes it possible to bring a specific narrative into the center of the debate, through which the dissemination as well as the circulation of historical knowledge can be revealed. The central question is: in the context of venereal diseases, how is a gendered identity constituted? Or in a more general sense: how does a person become a subject in our culture? |

Stefan Wuensch received his Magister Artium (MA) in modern history and social sciences from the Humboldt University at Berlin in 2006. He is currently research fellow at the Center for Literary and Cultural Research (ZfL) in Berlin. From 2007-2010 he was PhD-student at graduate school “Gender as a Category of Knowledge” at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin |
