German Shame. Gender. Media. »Täterkinder«:
An Analysis of how Niklas Frank, Beate Niemann, and Malte Ludin Came to Terms with the Past
 

Description of the Project

Family heritage, the impact of (West) German politics of history, and the effects of shame, all are central to this study. The complex relationship between universalism and particularism is analyzed in light of the focus on subject-generating emotion. To that ends, three individual processes of coming to terms are examined. Here, gender coding plays an important role because it is part of a long tradition of historical interpretation. Therefore, it reaches beyond the individual cases examined here. Individual and national historiography are inseparably bound to each other, in this specific context especially through the emotion shame. Building on the work of Hilge Landweer, Jean Paul Sarte, Louis Althusser, Renate Lorenz, and Judith Butler this study analyzes how of Niklas Frank, Beate Niemann, and Malte Ludin came to terms with the victimhood of their fathers (and mothers).

Studied Gender Studies and German Literature at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. 2006 – 2008 research fellow at the Research Training Group »Gender as a Category of Knowledge«. 2011 PhD in Gender Studies. 2011 – 2012 in the project »Jewish History in Europe« (Zeitpfeil. Studienwerk Berlin/Brandenburg im Politischen Arbeitskreis Schulen e.V.). 2012 assistant in the conception of an installation for the main excibition at Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Ravensbrück. Since 2012 scholar in Greifswald und Berlin.
