Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Gender as a Category of Knowledge

Christina Altenstraßer

PhD Project:
Knowledge, Gender, and Economics: The First Generation of Female Economists in Germany, 1900 – 1933
Altenstraßer

Description of the Project

The dissertation project explores how constructions of knowledge about gender and economics contributed to the positioning of women in the academic field. Following Bourdieu, in my dissertation I understand science as a »social field« constituted by mechanisms of construction and definition of »science,« »scientific knowledge,« and »scientists.« I examine the first generation of fe-male economists at the University of Berlin (Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität) 1900 – 1933, based upon an analysis of a corpus of archival sources (Habilitationsakten), reviews in the leading
economic journals from 1900 to 1933, and contemporary writings on science, economics, and gender.
