Situated Gender: Organization, Psychiatry, and Anthropology in Robert Musil’s novel
»The Man Without Qualities«

  

 

Description of the Project

 

The study analyzes the interconnection of gender and knowledge in Robert Musil’s novel »The Man Without Qualities« and in the scientific texts to which it relates. Thereby it demonstrates the sedimentation of regimes of gender and knowledge on the one hand, and the constitutive role of forms of representation for these regimes on the other. The general hypothesis is that the novel not only includes forms of knowledge but also situates them in their historical context by explicating their gendered, discursive, and representational conditions.
                                                 

Particulars

 Florian Kappeler studied German literature and philosophy in Cologne and Berlin, 1/2008-12/2010 postgraduate at the Research Training Group, 9/2009-11/2009 doctoral research trip to the University of California, Berkeley, 4/2011-7/2011 lecturer at the Institute for Comparative Literature, Free University, Berlin, since 5/2011 postdoc and coordinator of the Doctoral Program at the Center for the History of Knowledge, ETH & University of Zurich. Since 2018 research assistant (own position, DFG) at the seminar for German philology at the University of Göttingen.
