PhD Project: Eunuchs, Princesses, and Penetration: Masculinities and Body Politics in German Historiography (1780 – 1900) |

Description of the Project
|
According to popular opinion, the discipline of history was established within Germany as a masculine discipline. What does that mean in specifically? In considering this problem the PhD project aims to specify this thesis and also to differentiate it: which disciplinary elements and which masculinities are involved in the discipline’s masculinization? In this project two types of sources are consulted: texts answering the question what academic history was or should be, and portraits of individual historians. These are used to explore which disciplinary knowledge was intertwined with knowledge of gender and the body. In so doing, the project broadens the existing research in four senses: (1) it defines the space of the historical discipline more precisely and revises it partial; (2) it adds aspects of body history missing in the history of historiography so far; (3) it takes the under-represented visualisations of social realities seriously; and (4) it contributes to body history in general as single results are put into a systematic approach in order to identify general ways of addressing, placing, and defining the body. |
