PhD Project: Christian Sexualities in Secular Times

| Description of the Project | My PhD project is concerned with the interrelatedness of »religion« and »sexuality.« This interrelatedness will be analyzed on the basis of Christian positions about »homosexuality,« whereby the Christian debate on »homosexuality« since the 1960s in Germany serves as the historical and cultural framework for my analysis. This analysis especially seeks to question the different definitions of »homosexuality« and the knowledge that serves as the foundations of those varying definitions. First, in this context »homosexuality« is defined in dissociation from general »sexuality,« i.e., »heterosexuality,« and in combination with questions of gender identity. I argue that the Christian debate around »homosexuality« is not just an expression of religious conflicts over sexual ethics that focus on the question of how to define »sexuality,« but that the debate also centers around the essential definition of »being Christian.« |
