Research Questions

The working group „Bodies“ is an international and interdisciplinary network: its members are from Denmark, Germany, France, and Austria, who work in religion studies, history, south-east Asia studies, American studies and gender studies. The working group addressed body-historical and body-theoretical research questions. Oriented toward the projects of the group members and interested especially in physical and symbolic bodies, historical, individual and collective, metaphoric and visualized bodies. The thematic emphases of this working group were:

1)   relationships between bodies and other social structures, categorizations such as sex, sexuality, religion, nation and space.

2)   understandings of individual and collective bodies

3)   understandings of body politics

4)   the relationship between bodies and texts.

Together these served to provide an overview of theoretical models and different bodies, as well as serving to work through body history. The temporal emphases of the working group were the 13th and 18th-20th centuries. The principal working forms of the working group were regular meetings, research contributions, and some written works that were discussed. In addition the working group organized workshops and teaching events.
