Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Gender as a Category of Knowledge

Jan Severin

PhD Project:

Masculinity and Colonialism: A Historical Analysis of Gender Constructions and Their Efficacy in German Southwest Africa

Description of the Project The aim of this project is to depict and analyze how German colonizers conceived German and indigenous masculinities, and the effects those perceptions had on the structures of colonial rule, as well as day-to-day forms of colonial power. It concentrates on German Southwest Africa and in the period of formal colonial rule from 1884 to 1915. The main focus is on the domains of labor and sexuality, since both are (without being entirely separate) linked to central aspects of colonial rule and its strategies of legitimation, yet enable us to examine view on different fields and practices of colonial rule.
