Description

This is the second annual workshop on gender regimes, supported by the Humboldt Foundation Anneliese Maier Research Award to Sylvia Walby. It offers a distinctive macro level perspective on changes in gender relations.

The theme this year focuses on trajectories of changes in gender regimes: what these changes are empirically, how they compare over time and place, and how they should be conceptualised and theorised in gender regime theory.

Is the change best understood as a move to a conservative, or neoliberal or fascist gender regime? How are the concepts of family, modernity and reproduction deployed in these analyses? How are different scales of change, and the interaction between scales (global, world regional, national, subnational) and multiple levels of institutional constellations (within and across the domains of gender regimes and at the macro and meso-levels) important for comparing trajectories of transformation? What role do feminist movements and coalitions play in the dynamics of change? How is the increased significance of violence, including gender-based violence, to be addressed? What is the significance of de-democratisation? What is the relationship between changes in gender regimes and capitalism, and how is this relationship exposed through theorizations and impacts of crises? What is the significance of changes in the pertinence of borders, migration, and the reconstruction of the EU for macro level theorisation of the intersection of gender regimes and capitalism? In what way does gender regime theory need to be revised to take better account of these issues and change in non-European contexts and on a global scale?

This workshop builds on the work published in Social Politics in 2010.
