Description of the Project

»Touching the Limits: Utopias of Transgender Embodiment in Contemporary Cinema« is a doctoral research project in which I examine spaces of disidentification (Butler, Muñoz) within Trans*Cinema. My project engages predominantly with mainstream film productions. In particular, am I concerned with dis_identificatory spaces for trans* spectators within these films. The project draws on films such as »Boys don’t Cry« (1999), »Transamerica« (2005) or »Laurence Anyways« (2012) as well as many more that have been released since the beginning oft the 1990s.
I conceptualize certain elements of these films as »exit scapes,« which engender spaces of intimate and multisensorial engagement between film and viewer. My project is based on queerfeminist and trans*feminist discussions of embodiment, agency, affect, and subjectivity. It draws on feminist materialist notions of performativity, body, and matter.
