Research Questions

The working group “Intersectionality” was founded as a forum for members of the research training group who wanted to critically reflect on their projects from a different angle, such as gender, race, sexuality or class, than their main approach. First we introduced theories of “intersectionality”. We discussed the issue in the anglophone worlds well as in the German speaking world and compiled a bibliography.

The group problematized the transferability and translatability of different categories (for example race) from a US-American context into a German one, and also examined the links between research in intersectionality and the debate over traveling concepts. The group also examined the question of possibilities for links from approaches to intersectionality and postcolonial or queer theory.

The working group “intersectionality” organized two events: first a working group workshop with Dr. Encarnación Gutiérrez Rodríguez, which took place at HU on 11. Sept 2005. At this event the group discussed the reciprocal relationship between different control and discrimination and general term and theorization questions, among others regarding differences between intersectionality and interdependency theories. The two events “Doing intersectionality. Theorizing practice—practicing theory” on 29 June to 30 June 2006 consisted of a public podium discussion with professor Dr. María do Mar Castro Varela, Dr. Nikita Dhawan and Dr. Hanna Hacker, as well as a working group internal workshop with presenters at which the dissertation projects of the working group members were discussed in light of intersectional research analysis.

A further public activity of the working group “intersectionality” was the direction of the panel “Where, when and how? Contextualizing Intersectionality” at the 6th European Gender Research Conference titled “citizenship in a multicultural context ”, University of Lodz, Poland, which took place from 31 August until 3 September 2006. The plan contribution of the working group “intersectionality” was published in the conference proceedings which will were published in 2008.
