Kurzbeschreibung

The discourse on entangled histories/histoire croisée is not new and in our postcolonial and globalised present the idea that any recourse to culture must be understood as transnational and based on complex forms of global interactions and power hierarchies a widely held consensus that also affects how we reassess cultural interactions of the past. Nevertheless, literary studies and artistic practice still tend to focus on the national canon or promote curatorial practices that rely strongly on national frameworks, e.g. in the form of national pavilions. The lecture series Aesthetic Entanglements in Transnational Literature and the Arts at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is meant as a forum to discuss literary and artistic practices of the past and present as entangled, inviting scholars working in different national philologies to probe what such an entangled approach to culture might contribute to our disciplines. Entanglement here is explicitly understood as not only limited to a question of transnational post/colonial interactions but also as an aesthetic lens that might help re-examine artistic formations and genres.
